"The goal is to achieve an infinite tension within a complex, dynamic, and permanent linear program" |
|
Gauguin
once wrote, “Art is either plagiarism or revolution.”
Although ostensibly dualistic and extreme, the subtext of this
statement rings true. Art that is at its core derivative is
merely a product; it is a low form of creation, it is art, not
Art. My goal is to press my creativity forward so that my expression's
involvement lies within the realm of High Art. Of Art that calls
upon extreme emotions and is complex formally or conceptually.
Of Art that creates an intellectual and visual communication
through a dynamic visual program, invoking an applicable change
in the viewer’s ontology. In short, Art that is important
to existence and the history thereof. It is my intention, my
motivation, to achieve this level of artistic experience with
my personal work. I wish to cause critical changes in the world
around me vis a vis the viewer. I do not desire my work to be
loved, or appreciated by the masses. I only desire for it to
be seen. When my creations are consistently akin to the level
of Art, it will not matter if they are loved or hated, history
and the subjective experience of the viewer will dictate their
importance and their relevance.
Primarily, my work is accomplished
with ink. I use all sorts of applicators, from pens and metal
nibs, to quills and sticks. The inherent dynamic of the line
is at the heart of my aesthetic. I attempt to achieve infinite
simultaneous realities within each piece. Consequently, each
image is very different over distances. From afar it appears
as an almost abstract anthropomorphic form, but as one approaches
closer to the image itself, the viewer discovers the multitude
of separate levels and sections of imagery within the piece.
More is always there than initially meets the eye. This is true
with my work as it is in the experience of life. The work’s
relation to the reality surrounding us is the fundamental and
conceptual essence of my aesthetic. I work in a permanent medium
and I work as close to an open flow of consciousness as possible.
Rarely do I do any preliminary sketches or treatments to work
up the image. When working with ink, there are no mistakes or
failures that can prevent the artist from pressing on. One must
improvise, adapt and overcome; improve upon a mistake that could
potentially destroy the flow of the piece, into a working constituent
element. One cannot go back in time, just as I cannot erase
my ink. However, when something goes wrong in either my artistic
arena, or the arena of my reality, I choose to learn from it,
improve upon it and move forward. I endeavor to make it work
and to sustain the visual communication.
This is what I strive for
as a creator. My intention is to keep crying out in this novel
visual language that I’ve created, and along the way,
see if anyone understands. It is my purpose because I choose
it to be. And if I only confuse and aggravate the viewers with
the complexity of my creations it matters not. Either way, I
intend to keep screaming. |
